Read our top 10 most frequently asked questions about Jotun’s SteelMaster range and find out why it is the best fire protection option for your structure:
SteelMaster is a range of thin-film intumescent coatings designed to protect structural steel against cellulosic fire for anywhere between 30 and 180 minutes. It's typically used in airports, shopping malls, factories, buildings and power plants.
Thin-film intumescent coatings provide reactive fire protection. The thin coating, covering structural steel, swells to insulate the steelwork during a fire. Due to the changing physical form, fire protection is achieved by thermal insulation that provides a cooling effect.
SteelMaster thin film intumescent technology is superior to other types of fire protection as a decorative paint finish can be achieved. SteelMaster can fire protect your building for up to 180 minutes.
Jotun’s SteelMaster range is primarily applied to the structural steel used in buildings.
SteelMaster can be also used over galvanised steel providing the substrate is suitably primed and that the appropriate fire rating can be achieved through this.
There are no proven benefits for using SteelMaster products to protect stainless steel, wooden surfaces, concrete, aluminium, plaster, blockwork or bricks.
SteelMaster is not suitable for use where hydrocarbon fires may occur. In these cases, an epoxy intumescent coating such as Jotun's Jotachar is recommended.
The high-quality aesthetic finish makes the SteelMaster range the preferred choice of architects. In addition, SteelMaster provides efficient and economical solutions in the construction phase, making it the preferred choice of the applicators.
In terms of the Jotun product warranty, correctly maintained SteelMaster coatings can last the lifetime of a building.
Yes. All structural steel featured in a building is required to have fire protection throughout. Therefore, bolt heads and any adjoining steelwork should be suitably prepared and primed, and protected with SteelMaster.
Only primers and topcoats evaluated and approved by Jotun for compatibility, adhesion, and fire performance should be used in conjunction with SteelMaster products. Consult with your local Jotun representative for more information.
Yes, indeed! That means there's no need for touch-ups caused by transport damage, and you can get your steel delivered and erected more quickly. Also, technical support is available to applicators as they work, which ensures top-quality results. That being said, most SteelMaster coatings can also be applied offsite if required.
